USDA: 2018 U.S. soybean acres top corn

U.S. producers planted more than 89 million acres each of corn and soybeans this year. That’s more than what the USDA was projecting in March, but down 1% from the 2017 totals. It’s also only the second time on record U.S. producers have planted more soybeans than corn, the last was 1983.

The USDA reported corn at 89.128 million acres, compared to 90.167 million last year, with planted area steady to lower in 31 of the 48 states used in the estimate, while soybean acreage was 89.557 million, compared to 90.142 million a year ago, with steady to lower planted area in 14 of the 31 surveyed states.
